Early on Wednesday, March 29, administrators at the Matthew Henson Middle School were alerted to the smell of marijuana coming from one of the bathrooms, prompting further investigation.

School officials responded to the bathroom, where they found a student who was in possession of a replica handgun, several rounds of ammunition, and drug paraphernalia that included a grinder with cannabis inside and a lighter, all of which were seized, officials said.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, the School Resource Officer assigned to the middle school was notified, and an investigation has been launched.

The student’s parents were also advised of the incident and the school followed up with a home safety check.

Due to Maryland law, the student will not face any criminal charges due to his age, but the incident has been put on record with the Charles County Department of Juvenile Services in case follow-up services are required.

The student will; however, face discipline through the Charles County Public Schools system.
